Health and Wellness Benefits of Glutathione

By Krzysztof Kacprzak, MD

Glutathione is the mother of all antioxidants.  Found in every cell of the body, glutathione helps fight diseases and supports the immune system’s cells that work hard to prevent you from getting sick and lessens the severity of viral infections.

Glutathione consists of three powerful amino acids, the basic building blocks of all the body’s major processes. When present in high enough concentrations, Glutathione quickly and effectively protects against free radicals and prevents the damage they can cause. Glutathione helps fight infections (bacteria, viruses, etc.) by priming the white cells that fight infection, such as natural killer (NK) and T-cells.

Optimize Your Glutathione Levels

Although the body generates its own glutathione, it generally doesn’t produce enough to cope with all the free radicals, toxins and stress we deal with every day. When Glutathione (GSH) is depleted, immune cells lose their ability to fight infections. Chronic diseases, poor immunity and an increased rate of infections are linked to low GSH levels. Viral infections flood the body with oxidative stress due to inflammation, using up more glutathione.

It also appears that glutathione actually has a direct anti-bacterial effect, as it helps a cell of the immune system in fighting the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. According to researchers, “GSH works to modulate the behavior of many cells including the cells of the immune system, augmenting the innate and the adaptive immunity as well as conferring protection against microbial, viral and parasitic infections.”
