Oxytocin is a hormone that acts primarily as a neurotransmitter in the brain. It is most prevalent in pregnant and nursing mothers and is the hormone that triggers both lactating and contractions. Outside of the period of time during and just after pregnancy, oxytocin production in the female brain is at its highest before and immediately following orgasm. Oxytocin contributes to feelings of contentment, reductions in anxiety, and feelings of calmness and security around a mate. As with most of our beneficial hormones, the human body produces less and less oxytocin as we age. Female sexual dysfunction often times is left untreated as it does not manifest itself in an obvious fashion such as an inability to produce an erection. Aging women may feel a lack of intimacy with a partner or find it increasingly difficult to climax. In many cases this is not a product of a "stale" relationship, but more a result of an easily treatable hormone imbalance. This condition will be exacerbated with the onset of menopause.
In order for a woman to reach full orgasm, it is necessary for the brain regions associated with fear and anxiety to be deactivated. Oxytocin allows individuals to let go of fear and anxiety during sexual arousal thereby allowing a woman to achieve orgasm which may be impossible to reach without therapy. Many studies have already shown a correlation of oxytocin with human bonding, increases in trust, and decreases in fear. One study confirmed that there was a positive correlation between oxytocin plasma levels and an anxiety scale measuring the adult romantic attachment.
